Have you ever admired those vibrant, chunky necklaces and thought, "I wish I could make that"? Well, you absolutely can! Welcome to the colorful world of bubblegum bead crafting. It’s a fun, creative hobby that’s much easier than it looks, and Pop Lollies Boutique is the perfect place to start. If you’ve been hesitant to dive in, this beginner’s guide is for you. Get started today.
Your first step is supplies. The easiest way to find the perfect components is by browsing for bubblegum beads online. At Pop Lollies Boutique, you'll discover a huge array of colors, rhinestones, and fun focal pendants. For your first project, we highly recommend sticking with large hole beads. Their wider opening (usually 2mm or more) makes them incredibly easy to thread, saving you frustration. You’ll also need a strong stringing material—like 1.5mm cording—and a "breakaway" clasp for safety, which is essential if making the necklace for a child.
This is where your inner artist shines! Before you string a single bead, lay out your design on a flat surface or a bead board. Decide if you want a symmetrical pattern, a repeating color block, or a whimsical, random mix. This is the perfect time to incorporate different textures and sizes. While the classic bubblegum bead is 20mm, you can create depth by adding smaller spacers, like shiny 6mm beads or pearlized 8mm beads, between your larger focal pieces.
Once you’re happy with your layout, it’s time to assemble. Cut your cord to the desired length (a typical child’s necklace is 16-18 inches, plus a little extra for tying). Start stringing your beads one by one, following your design. These components are ideal beads for necklaces because of their lightweight feel despite their chunky look. And don't forget, these are also fantastic beads for bracelets if you have leftovers!
